Rather than the isolated recluse history often portrays, the film reveals Emily’s deep and lifelong romantic relationship with her friend and sister-in-law, Susan Gilbert Dickinson (Susan Ziegler), while exploring how her work and identity were later rewritten to fit more conservative narratives.
The film earned critical praise for its wit, originality, and revisionist approach to literary history. It was nominated for the John Cassavetes Award at the 35th Independent Spirit Awards and won the US in Progress Prize at the Champs-Élysées Film Festival.
