The Miseducation of Cameron Post

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, The Miseducation of Cameron Post is a tender, heartbreaking, and quietly defiant coming-of-age drama about self-acceptance in the face of intolerance. Directed by Desiree Akhavan and adapted from Emily M. Danforth’s acclaimed novel, the film examines the cruelty and absurdity of conversion therapy with both sensitivity and biting wit.

Set in the early 1990s, the story follows Cameron Post (Chloë Grace Moretz), a teenage girl sent to a Christian conversion camp after being caught with her girlfriend on prom night. At “God’s Promise,” she’s subjected to a program that aims to “cure” her of same-sex attraction. Amid the repression and manipulation, Cameron finds solace and solidarity with two fellow campers—Jane (Sasha Lane) and Adam (Forrest Goodluck)—who challenge the camp’s ideology with resilience and humor.

Akhavan’s direction is empathetic and restrained, allowing the emotional truth of the characters to shine through understated performances and quiet moments of rebellion. Moretz delivers one of her most nuanced roles, portraying Cameron’s growing defiance with grace and authenticity.

Both deeply personal and socially resonant, The Miseducation of Cameron Post is a story about the right to define one’s own identity—a moving reminder that self-love, in the face of oppression, is an act of resistance.
