Lucky Grandma

Lucky Grandma is a darkly comedic crime drama that blends sharp humor with heartfelt humanity. Set in New York City’s Chinatown, the film follows Grandma Wong (Tsai Chin), a fiercely independent and chain-smoking widow who refuses to fade quietly into old age. After a fortuneteller predicts a streak of good luck, Grandma sets out to change her fate—only to become entangled in the city’s criminal underworld after a bag of cash quite literally lands in her lap.

Directed by Sasie Sealy and co-written with Angela Cheng, the film premiered at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival, where it earned critical acclaim for its originality and wit. Tsai Chin’s commanding performance anchors the story with equal parts toughness and vulnerability, portraying a woman whose resilience and mischief make her both an unlikely hero and an unforgettable character.

Visually vibrant and steeped in cultural texture, Lucky Grandma balances noir-inspired tension with comedic absurdity. Beneath its humor lies a poignant reflection on aging, autonomy, and the ways we seek control in a world that too often overlooks the elderly.

With its mix of grit, charm, and heart, Lucky Grandma is a love letter to Chinatown and to all the grandmothers who refuse to be underestimated.
